KOH CHANG REHAB

Koh Chang, thailand The Ultimate Rehab Getaway Destination

As one of the few island destinations in Thailand with a rehab centre that caters to foreign clients, Koh Chang offers a fine mix of beauty and isolation for thousands of visitors every year. Located in the province of Trat, southeast of Bangkok, near the Cambodian border, Koh Chang feels less developed than some of Thailand’s more famous island destinations. Yet its hilly landscape and rugged charm provide more than enough points of interest to make rehab in Koh Chang a fascinating and fulfilling place to begin your recovery.

This article will introduce Koh Chang as one of Thailand’s notable rehab destinations, focussing on its highlights and potential drawbacks to help you decide whether the island is right for you.

Background of Koh Chang

Encompassing over 200 square kilometres, Koh Chang has more than enough space for its eight villages and national park area. The name translates to ‘Elephant Island’ – and while there are now elephants on Koh Chang, they are not native to the island. The name instead comes from the shape of the land, which resembles an elephant’s head in profile.

The island offers plenty of shade, west-facing beaches (perfect for sunsets), snorkelling and diving opportunities around the offshore reefs, and a slow-paced, welcoming atmosphere.

Description:

Dara Rehab is one of the oldest drug and alcohol rehab facilities in Thailand and was originally called Channah. It is now under new management and ownership and is part of the group that also owns Lanna Rehab.

The facility consists of shared and individual luxury villas on a cliff side location on the island of Koh Chang. Whilst you do get an ocean side setting, the location is rather remote and involves a full day’s journey from Bangkok via car and ferry. The remoteness of the location can be the ultimate island escape and really getting you away from your everyday life. However, it can be difficult to receive emergency medical care in the event of a mental health issue or unforeseeable event.

Dara Rehab is one of a few treatment centres in Thailand that doesn’t follow the 12 Step philosophy but have an approach they call DARA’s “Integrated Cognitive-Behaviour Treatment (ICBT) Model”. This utilises a variety of clinical interventions designed to produce positive outcomes. Counsellors are expected to have experience and expertise in each of these modalities. However, as there are over 10 treatment modalities, it is very difficult to imagine any one person have experience and expertise in more than a few.

Why seek drug and alcohol rehabilitation in Koh Chang

Although just a few hours’ drive from Bangkok, Koh Chang feels like it is a world away. Its distinctive beaches and fascinating landscape give visitors plenty of opportunities to relax or go exploring in their free time. While the island’s rocky shoreline differs from many people’s notions of what Thai beaches normally look like, Koh Chang’s unique character tends to grow on its visitors.

Moreover, Koh Chang is the only island rehab destination in Thailand – besides the highly developed Phuket. In contrast to Phuket rehabs, rehab in Koh Chang occurs in an area with less business development and a smaller population of both local people and visitors. For those looking to escape the fast pace of modern life, Koh Chang might just be the ultimate island getaway.

Does rehab in Koh Chang include detox?

Koh Chang’s rehab centres do not include onsite detox treatment, so you will need to undergo that process (and pay for it) outside the facility, if it is necessary – although the treatment centre on the island can help you make the necessary arrangements.

What should you expect from rehab in Koh Chang?

In terms of accommodation, both shared and private rooms are available. As a rehab client on Koh Chang, you will have the opportunity to join island excursions in addition to your main treatment, giving you plenty of chances to appreciate the special features of this tropical island setting.

How much does rehab in Koh Chang cost?

Prices will vary depending on the type of accommodation you choose, with different options from shared rooms, pool villas, to executive suites. In general a cost of less than US$10,000 for a 4-week treatment period can be expected.

getting to Koh Chang

Koh Chang is one of the closest islands to Bangkok, making it accessible from the city – although the trip will nevertheless take a bit of time. Every method of travel from Bangkok is likely to require at least a half-day, door to door. The trip is split into three stages: Getting to the port, taking the ferry, and taking the transfer vehicle from the island port to the rehab location itself.

By car

A bus ride from Bangkok’s city centre typically lasts about 5 hours, with an additional ferry trip and transfer to follow. For those who prefer minibuses, many hotels and guesthouses in the city can arrange for one of these smaller and more nimble vehicles to take you to the port. A private taxi could also bring you all the way from the city, perhaps saving you an hour of travel time, but at a significantly higher cost.

By air

A quicker way to arrive is by air. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport has regular flights to Trat, a small seaside city whose airport is just a few kilometres from the ferry port that can bring you the rest of the way to Koh Chang. Prices vary by season, but this flight could be convenient if you are arriving from overseas – as it may let you save time by avoiding a night’s stay in Bangkok.

Ferries to the island are cheap, and available all day, every day of the year. Every rehab centre will be happy to arrange pickup once you are on the island.
