DARA REHAB REVIEW

DARA RehabKoh Chang, Thailand

Review summary

DARA Rehab is one of the oldest drug and alcohol rehab facilities in Thailand. Initially known as Channah, they are one of a few rehab centres that don’t follow the 12-step addiction recovery approach. The beautiful jungle island setting provides serenity and remoteness ideal for healing and recovery.

The Facility

DARA Rehab’s facility consists of 40 shared and individual luxury villas on a cliffside location on the tropical island of Koh Chang in the Gulf of Thailand. It is located in a tranquil location amid a national park, and the centre is immersed in lush greenery and trees over a hundred years old. Cutting trees is not allowed in the garden so it can get a bit dark and gloomy. However, don’t get surprised if you run into monkeys jumping through trees and wandering around the property.

The remoteness of the location can be the ultimate island escape and really getting you away from your everyday life. However, it can be challenging to receive emergency medical care in the event of a mental health issue or unforeseeable event. In case of emergencies, there is a medical clinic 2.4 km from the centre.

DARA Rehab is not a medical facility. Clients can obtain medical detoxification and prescription medication through a local partner hospital, but the additional fees apply.

The Treatment

Unlike many other rehab centres in Thailand, treatment at DARA Rehab doesn’t involve the 12-step philosophy. They offer a “variable” non-12 step treatment programme, allowing clients who are looking for a different way to overcome a drug or alcohol addiction. They use an approach they call DARA’s “Integrated Cognitive-Behavioural Treatment (ICBT) Model”.

ICBT Model encompasses a variety of clinical modalities including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Person-centred Therapy, Behavioural Modification, Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt therapy, etc. to promote recovery and sober living. Counsellors are expected to have experience and expertise in each of these modalities. However, there are over ten treatment modalities, so it is hard to imagine that every team member has experience and knowledge in all of them.

They offer four, six, and twelve-week treatment programmes. The length of your stay at DARA Rehab depends on your individual needs, progress in treatment, and compliance with the treatment demands.

The facility can accommodate up to 40 people due to a revolving door process, a system that sacrifices client bonding, group cohesion and flows for ease of admission, which often occurs in a large size group. This can make it hard to personalise your treatment at a full capacity.

The Team

DARA Rehab is part of the group that also owns Lanna Rehab in Chiang Mai. At DARA, they pride themselves on having a client at the centre of care and claim an average completion rate of 92 percent.

Their clinical team includes therapists who are native English speakers with a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. They state that the centre’s therapists hold qualifications in Mental Health and Addiction from acknowledged Western universities. In addition to the therapy team, at DARA Rehab, you’ll find a team of support workers, nursing team, physical trainers team, and operation team.

Since DARA Rehab is set on an island, the centre offers a variety of unique outdoor activities, so their clients can take pleasure in kayaking, snorkelling, PADI scuba diving, and more. Whilst you do get an oceanside setting, the site is relatively remote and involves a full day’s journey from Bangkok via car and ferry.
