New Life Foundation Chiang Rai, Thailand

New Life Foundation Review

New Life Foundation is a nonprofit, mindful recovery retreat in Northern Thailand. They provide a supportive learning space for people with mild addiction and mental health issues, as well as those who want to take a break from life and work on personal development and well-being.

The Facility

New Life Foundation is located on spacious grounds 30 minutes outside central Chiang Rai, Thailand’s most northern province. The facility features more than 50 simple but comfortable rooms with a ceiling fan, bed, wardrobe, working desk, and private bathroom. The clients can use the centre’s three meditation rooms, a steam bath, a swimming pool, a small outdoor workout area, the dining hall, and a recreational hall.

The centre also has its own farm on 63 acres of land, and sustainable farming makes an integral aspect of their healing and mindfulness programme. They grow rice, vegetables, fruit, and corn, using their own produce to prepare nutritious Thai and international cuisine.

The remoteness from medical facilities is less of a problem here because they take clients who are more stable than a traditional rehab facility. Therefore, the requirements for medical detox and mental health care are significantly fewer.

The Treatment

New Life Foundation philosophy primarily focuses on a holistic programme with the practice of meditation as the backbone of treatment. Their integrative approach combines counselling, community living, yoga, volunteer work, nature therapy, a range of individual or group activities, and mindfulness to treat anxiety, stress, burnout, and other mental health issues.

Each client is encouraged to develop an individual action plan under guidance from the staff and with the community’s support. This action plan allows clients to discover their potential and take on new, healthy lifestyles grounded in mindfulness, truthfulness, responsibility, and respect.

Their programme is more suited to people who have completed a primary programme and achieved a time of abstinence and for those who have an interest in Buddhism and mindfulness.

The Team

New Life Foundation was established in 2010 as a nonprofit residential addiction recovery centre. It was set up by a Dutch entrepreneur who had attended the Thamkrabok monastery for his addiction and wanted to set up an affordable programme for addiction, personal growth, and healing.

Community is the heart of the New Life Foundation. Their team of staff and volunteers provide support and guidance to new members, giving the centre a family-like atmosphere. The emphasis in their community is on open communication and the deep bonds that develop among members while living, learning, working, and recovering together. This allows clients to gain a sense of belonging and acceptance that are essential in recovery.

The fees are very affordable, so if you need long term secondary treatment, then this could be a good option.
